Understanding Dehydration: Causes, Symptoms and Precautions

Dehydration is when our body loses more fluids than it takes. It can adversely affect our well-being and can cause discomfort. In case of chronic dehydration, we can fall prey to many diseases

01

Causes

Medication, Illness, & Excessive Sweating

Certain medications that have diuretic properties and blood pressure medication can cause excessive fluid loss. We may also lose fluids during prolonged illness, which may involve vomiting and diarrhea.

02

Symptoms

Fatigue, Dizziness and Headache

After dehydration, the body can experience dizziness, fatigue, and lightheadedness due to less blood volume and oxygen reaching the body. Under some worse conditions, we can experience headaches and fainting.

Dry Urine and Dry Mouth

A few can feel dry, sticky mouth, and thirsty, which can be early signs of dehydration. In many cases, the frequency of urination decreases, and its appearance changes to dark yellow.

03

Precautions

Drink Plenty of Fluids & be Mindful of Activities

If you feel dehydrated, then drink plenty of liquids. Set a reminder and drink liquid continuously during these hours. If you are exercising in hot weather, always carry a water bottle.

Monitor Urine Color

If you feel dehydrated, monitor the color of your urine. If it turns to pale yellow, you must drink a lot of liquid to overcome your situation.
